iWise Enterprise Release Management FAQs

iWise Enterprise Release Management (Answers)

The ability to perform ERM functions requires careful planning and coordination. To provide ERM services for a given workstation requires both remote and local software agents to communicate with each other.

The iWise CMDB supports the association of the appropriate Enterprise Release Management functional policy for each specific CI. infraWise will integrate the corresponding ERM process functions of third party tool(s) with iWise policies to accomplish these functions.

Does iWise allow for manageable software distribution from both a Windows client as well as a web interface?

Yes. iWise provides a base CMDB capability that can identify specific components for which specific Enterprise Release Management policies and profiles will be associated. Linked to the Release Management tool(s), these associations perform the actual software release functions via Windows or web interfaces to control access rights on a per-PC basis.

Is software distribution available for all operating systems/platforms in use, including Mainframe and Client Server?

Yes. Specified in the ERM policy defined in the iWise CMDB is the ability to perform Enterprise Release Management on a given operating system. Linked to the Release Management tool(s), this policy performs the actual remote software distribution functions.

Does iWise support Wake on LAN technology?

Yes. Specified in the ERM policy defined in the iWise CMDB is the ability to perform Enterprise Release Management on a given PC that supports wake on LAN (WOL) functions. Linked to the iWise policy is the Release Management tool(s) that performs the remote WOL functions.

Does iWise provide reliable distribution with checkpoint/restart capabilities?

Yes. Specified in the ERM policy defined in the iWise CMDB is the ability to perform Enterprise Release Management with checkpoint/restart capabilities. Linked to the iWise policy is the Release Management tool(s) that offers the checkpoint/restart capabilities.

Can iWise deliver client code to remote distribution centers?

Yes. Specified in the ERM policy defined in the iWise CMDB is the ability to perform Enterprise Release Management distribution to remote distribution control points. Linked to the iWise policy is the Release Management tool(s) that performs the remote software distribution functions.

Does iWise provide for automatic submission and tracking of jobs?

Yes. Specified in the ERM policy defined in the iWise CMDB is the ability to perform Enterprise Release Management job submission and tracking. Linked to this iWise policy is the Release Management tool(s) that performs the job submission and tracking functions.

Does iWise provide for efficient network bandwidth management?

Yes. Specified in the ERM policy defined in the iWise CMDB is the ability to perform Enterprise Release Management within performance threshold specifications and schedules. Linked to the iWise policy is the Release Management tool(s) that performs the remote software distribution functions within the bandwidth specifications and schedule.

Does iWise allow for the logging of separate release records to view related change, problem, and incident records in an expanded view?

Yes. The iWise CMDB contains link to all associated Service Management records from each CI. Related records, such as approved change records, are tied to specific distribution events, which in turn are linked to the activities performed by the external Release Management tools.

Does iWise provide status reporting on the lifecycle of the release (i.e. in development Testing, UAT, etc.)?

Yes. The planned activities that are performed throughout the life cycle of the release are accessed through the controlling service management records (requests or changes) in iWise. iWise uses standard reporting tools to communicate and report on the progress of releases.

Does iWise provide integration with the service desk component for automated exception logging?

Yes. External release management tools log any exceptions with the incident/problem processes of iWise. These exceptions are automatically assigned and managed, as are any other incidents/problems, regardless of origination.

Does iWise allow bare-metal operating system installation and subsequent application installations?

Yes. Specified in the release management policy defined in the iWise CMDB is the ability to perform release management installation to bare-metal PCs. Linked to the iWise policy is the release management tool(s) that performs the remote software installation functions.

Does iWise provide both push and pull software distribution?

Yes. Specified in the release management policy defined in the iWise CMDB is the ability to perform release management software distribution, with either a push or pull type of activity. Linked to the iWise policy is the release management tool(s) that performs the remote software push/pull functions.

Does iWise provide a user-selectable software and hardware catalog?

Yes. The iWise CMDB application provides a selectable list of all configuration items defined in the iWise CMDB. As part of the release management policy, also defined in the iWise CMDB, linkages to the standard catalog entries are established.
